English

The Dept. of English has been functioning since 1991.
The Dept. has been teaching Part II English common to all UG students.
B.A English literature was begun in 2008 for Shift I and in 2009 for Shift II with an overwhelming admission.
M.A English Literature was begun in 2011.
M.Phil English Literature has been started from the academic year 2013-2014.
The syllabus has been framed to provide a firm foundation in English for students who are mainly from rural areas featuring papers like ‘BASIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS’ and ‘SKILLS FOR SUCCESS’.

Department Library
The Department has a lending library which consists of 218 books used both by the staff and the students.

Language Lab
Language Lab is available for teaching phonetics which has been made a regular part in the process of learning.

Activities:

2013 – 2014

The department of English introduced the Bridge Course for the 1st year students to equip the students with communication skills. The PG & Research department inaugurated its association on 28th August 2013. Dr.A.Selvaraj, Associate Professor, Annamalai University, Chidambaram was the Chief Guest.

An awareness programme for the Post Graduate students on the topic “English for Specific Purposes – ESP” was organized on 06.10.2013. Creative Writing Competition was organized by Shakespeare Institute of English Studies, Chennai on 6th October 2013.

In the Inter-Departmental cultural competitions CHRISTIME’13, the department of English bagged the 2nd place in overall championship for Shift II.

M.Phil scholars of English had attended a two day conference cum workshop at Sacred Heart College, Tirupathur on 03.02.2014 and 04.02.2014.

An Inter-Departmental Essay, Poetry and Slogan writing contest was conducted on 17.02.2014.

A one day Seminar & Workshop for PG and Research Scholars on 4th March 2014. Dr. F. Abdul Rahim, Ph.D, Reader in English, Annamalai University was the chief guest. He delivered the keynote address on “Writing the Dissertation”.

2014 – 2015

        The English Association for Shift I and II was officially inaugurated on 7th August 2014. Dr. L. Kulandai Teresa Fatima, Associate Professor, Department Of English, C. Kandasamy Naidu College for Women was the Chief Guest and delivered the inaugural address on Verbal Communication.

        The Department Of English conducted an Inter-Departmental Essay Writing competition on 22nd September 2014. There was a great response from the student community and the meritorious students were awarded prizes and certificates.

        P. Patcy Mary of 1st English ‘C’ bagged the 2nd place in the State Level Essay competition conducted by Gandhian Integrated Forum Trust (Regd.), Chennai and was awarded the prize by His Excellency Thiru. Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu.

          In the Dist. Level Elocution Competition conducted by the Forest Department, Pravin Kumar of II B.A English & M. Sridhar of I M.A. English bagged the First and Third Prizes respectively.

         The Department of English conducted an Inter departmental Elocution Competition on 21st January 2015 and the meritorious students were awarded prizes and certificates.
