Profile of the department:
The post graduate department of social work has been planned to establish from the academic 2011-‘12 and was established in the year 2012-‘13 with the aim to provide quality education in social work in the field of Community Development and industrial social work.

Mission and Commitment:
As a whole, the Department of social work, St.Joseph’s College of Arts and Science, Cuddalore is committed to provide high quality education and training in social work and in related disciplines at postgraduate levels. In order to achieve this aim, the Department places important emphasis on seeking academic excellence while at the same time encourages scholars in the department to participate and contribute by means of research, training and consultation to the different professional Community in tamil Nadu. As a relatively small department, we see the importance of collegiality and team work and therefore seek to foster good community spirit among colleagues and between scholars and students. The Department is committed to whole person education goals and the holistic philosophy of higher education.

The course aims at preparing students for reflective professional practice in social work.

2013 – 2014

The Department of Social Work organized the inauguration of Association and a workshop on “Impact of Social Networking among youth” on 26th September, 2013.

Rural Awareness Camp is an integral part of the training programme for the students pursuing Social Work. This was organized for six days at Sathipattu from 25th to 30th October, 2013.

The Post Graduate Department of Social Work in collaboration with Actionaid organized a campaign on Gender equality termed as Beti Zindabad in hindi for the students of Shift – I and II on 9th December, 2013

A Seminar on Free Legal Assistance to Women was organized on 5th February 2014 in collaboration with Kasthurbai College for Women, Pondicherry. An awareness programme on Organ Donation was conducted in collaboration with MOHAN Foundation, Pondicherry at C. Kandasamy Naidu College for Women, Cuddalore on 10th February 2014. Mr. R. Anand, Transplant Coordinator of Mohan Foundation & Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Pondicherry was the chief guest. A seminar on emotional intelligence for women was organized on 14th February 2014 in collaboration with Thiruvalluvar Arts and Science College, Kurinjipadi. A programme on Sensitization about Transgender was conducted in collaboration with SCOHD society, Cuddalore on 17th February 2014. Miss K. Sheethal, Project Director, SCOHD Society, CBO, Cuddalore was the chief guest. A seminar on Harassment against Women was organized in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Arts and Science College, Thavalakuppam on 26th February 2014. A seminar on Negative Impact of Mobile among Women was conducted in collaboration with Tagore Arts College, Pondicherry on 6th March 2014. Mr. S. Ravi, Child Help Line Project Coordinator, Pondicherry Multipurpose Social Service Society was the chief guest. A workshop on attitude towards Interview was organized by the Department of Social Work for the final year student on 22nd March 2014. Mr. Y. C. Asokan, Chief Manager, Zonal Office, Indian Bank, Cuddalore was the chief guest. An awareness programme on Behavior Modification was organized in collaboration with Observation Home, Ariyankuppam, Pondicherry on 22nd March 2014. Mr. Raj Kumar, Clinical Psychologist, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Pondicherry was the chief guest. His insights on behavior modification were highly appreciated. Sports Day and a seminar on Positive Mental Health were organized in collaboration with Dhaya Special School, Cuddalore on 26th March 2014. Various sports events were conducted and prizes were distributed. Dr. Santhana Raj, NSS programme officer was the chief guest. A seminar on Student’s Motivation to life was organized in collaboration with Don Guanella Boys Home, Cuddalore to the students over there. Mr. Rajkumar, Clinical Psychologist, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Pondicherry was the chief guest. He highlighted the significance of motivation in life.

2014 – 2015

Rural Camp is an integral part of the training programme for the Students pursuing Social Work. The camp was organized for six days at Ko Mavidanthal from 8th to 13th September 2014 which was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. V. G. Charles, the administrator of St. Joseph’s College of Arts & Science, Cuddalore.

On 25th September a seminar on Agricultural Development was organized to the farmers at S. Pudhur, Cuddalore.

On 15th October the association organized a group project to the students of Government Girl’s Higher Secondary School, Manjakuppam, Cuddalore. A seminar on Personality Development and Career Guidance was organized. Rev. Fr. S. Xavier was the chief guest of the programme who spoke on problems faced by girls in today’s society.

On 16th October MSW students specializing in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work and Community Development organized an awareness programme on HIV/AIDS for the students of Padalesuwarar Polytechnic College, Cuddalore.

On 17th October a seminar on Women Leadership in Family was organized for the students of KNC for women, Cuddalore.

On 28th October a seminar on Motivation towards Sports and Career Development was organized. Dr. P. V. Shelvam, Professor, Dept. of Physical Education & Sports Sciences, Annamalai University, Chidambaram was the chief guest of the programme who motivated the students with his speech by presenting the need and importance of sports in life and Career development.

On 1st November an awareness programme on Personality Development was organized for the students of
Observation Home, Ariyankuppam.

The department of social has organized street theatre training for the MSW students from 1st to 12th December, 2014. Mr. M. Joseph Dhayalaseelan, member of Beschi Kalai Kuzhu, Kumbakonam diocese was the resource person for the training. This was conducted in order to equip the social work students with the street theatre skills which are needed for organizing various social development programs.
