Profile of the Departments

Preamble:

Microbiology was introduced as an undergraduate course (for the boys) in the year 1997 and existed as Bioscience Department, along with Biochemistry. An additional batch for the girls was started in the year 1998. The Department started functioning as an individual department from 1999. The Department started offering M. Sc. Applied Microbiology from the year 2010. The Department has also got affiliation for offering M. Phil. Microbiology from Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore.

Infrastructure:

The department has two well-furnished and spacious laboratories. An air-conditioned inoculation room for laboratory work and a computer for desk work are added features of the department.

Department Administration:

All the staff members share the various activities and responsibilities. Files, logbooks & registers are maintained to have a record of all the activities of the department. Staff meetings are conducted at least twice in a term, to discuss the syllabus, practical, student’s performance and other special tasks. Occasionally student representatives are also called for the meeting to discuss their grievances.

Innovations in teaching and learning:

The traditional method of chalk and talk has been replaced by the usage of OHP and LCD to the maximum extent. Educational CDs are frequently displayed to provide better understanding of the subject for the students.

Individual attention is given to every student during practical classes.

To provide an opportunity for students to gain up-to-date knowledge on the subject regular guest lectures both by the faculty and experts from outside are being arranged. Newspaper clippings on recent developments are displayed in the notice board and the same has been discussed in the classrooms.

Learning resources:

The department has set up a department library for the benefit of students as well as the staff members. Study materials are prepared and distributed to the students for the subject, which the students find difficult. Educational CDs are available in the department for the perusal of the students.

Remedial teaching:

Students weak in the subject are identified and given special care. Extra coaching and additional tests are also given for them. Students who studied their Higher Secondary through Tamil medium are also given special attention.

Academic performance:

Our students are doing well in the University Examinations and continuous efforts are taken to achieve cent present result. With our approach to make the better student the best, the department produced three University ranks so far.

Microbiology Association was inaugurated formally on 1st of October, 2013 for the academic year 2013 – 2014.

2014 – 2015

The Inaugural function of the Microbiology Association for the year 2014-2015 was held on 4^th August 2014 at 11.45 am.

Microbiology Association organized Guest Lecture programme on 12th December 2014. Dr. Sivasubramani, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Annamalai University delivered a lecture on “Metagenomics”.
